Environmental building products from paint
to cladding to HVAC systems, and everything in between, are increasing in demand.
By using environmental building products, the building owner and project team
are taking extra measures to lower the building’s environmental impacts during
the construction phase through to the operation of the building.
Environmental building products that make
up the mechanical aspects of the building are designed to be energy efficient.
Coupled with a high performance building envelope and other green building features,
this results in a building that generates fewer GHG emissions during its operating
life – also known as a green building.
Green buildings have a smaller impact on
the environment, and offer healthier indoor environments for occupants,
decreasing effects of sick-building syndrome and absenteeism. Many
manufacturers see the value in healthy green buildings and are embracing optimal
materials and transparency practices, such as life-cycle assessments (LCA), to
demonstrate the reduced health and environmental impacts of their products and
manufacturing processes. Pursuing Environmental Product Declarations, Health
Product Declarations, Cradle to Cradle and other recognized third-party
certifications allow building products to be competitive and relevant in the Canadian
green building marketplace.
Tools of the Trade
A wealth of resources are in development to
help project teams find compliant products for their green building projects.
Among these resources are the CaGBC LEED v4 Product Profiles. This expanding
resource has LEED project teams in mind as each product has successfully
contributed to a certified LEED v4 project. With an easy to read Product
Snapshot, users can identify the applicable credits, and the rating system and
certification level of the project.
Membership has its benefits
This is one of the many benefits available
to green building project teams and manufacturers across North America through
membership with the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). This is the only
national organization in Canada dedication to market transformation to a more
sustainable built environment, and provides value to its members through an
array of strategic benefits designed to increase exposure, nurture business to
business relationships and deliver valuable marketplace education and reports.
Companies that support the CaGBC are able to capture transformational and
measurable opportunities that align with their corporate sustainability goals.
